World Whiskies

Since its creation in 1956,

Ireland, Single Malt – Bushmills La Maison du Whisky has always distributed American whiskey and Canadian whisky in addition to scotch. World whiskies are in our DNA and our search for the finest expressions has never been limited by borders. In the 1970s, Irish whiskeys were featured in our catalogue for the first time, primarily through three brands, Paddy, Jameson and Bushmills. The latter, whose origins date back to 1608, is thought to be the oldest distillery in the world and La Maison du Whisky has had a unique relationship with this elder for many years.

Waterford,

which was founded in 2014, symbolizes the rebirth of whiskey production on the island. The name Mark Reynier will certainly already be familiar to many whisky lovers. A true visionary, he made a name for himself in 2000 when he brought Bruichladdich back to life, quickly transforming it into Islay’s most avant-garde distillery, famous for its turquoise-blue bottle and many limited editions. In 2012, he sold the distillery to the French group Rémy Cointreau and embarked on another ambitious project further south in Ireland: the creation of the Waterford distillery.

While still honouring Ireland’s traditional whiskey heritage, Waterford has rejuvenated the category. Authenticity and traceability are essential values for Mark Reynier, who is always keen to promote the concept of terroir. As a former wine merchant, this perhaps comes as no surprise.

American whiskey

is intrinsically linked to La Maison du Whisky’s history, as it has been part of our range since the start. And La Maison du Whisky has worked in close partnership with one of the United States’ most prestigious distilleries for over 25 years. In the summer of 1995, La Maison du Whisky discovered Blanton’s, the first Single Barrel Bourbon launched ten years previously exclusively in Japan, a country with a particular taste for bourbon.

Buffalo Trace,

is one of La Maison du Whisky’s historic partners. In addition to Buff alo Trace bourbon and Blanton’s single barrel bourbon, the immense distillery in Frankfort, Kentucky also produces Eagle Rare, Sazerac Rye and Weller. It is also behind rare whiskeys such as Papy Van Winkle, Van Winkle’s Rye and the Antique range, now some of the most sought — after American whiskeys in the world — and every year La Maison du Whisky is given a small allocation.

“a portfolio of extraordinary brands loved by enthusiasts the world over”

Jack Daniel’s

is one of the most famous brands in the world — and not just in the spirits category — it is the irrefutable leader in the world of bourbon. Founded by Jack Daniel in 1866 in Lynchburg, Tennessee, the distillery has produced a huge number of different versions over its history, including the most famous, Old No. 7, which has been released in a multitude of different expressions. La Maison du Whisky has sold Jack Daniel’s since its early days, in everything from special series to decanters and single barrels.

On the other side of the US, the East Coast is home to Widow Jane, a city-distillery whose whiskey we have distributed since 2016. Located in the centre of Brooklyn and sourcing its water over 90 miles north from New York’s former mine, it produces both bourbon and rye, and even has its own chocolate factory! Through the bottlings of Sonoma and Widow Jane found in this year’s catalogue, we hope to showcase the trend for craft products, which has, in addition to the world of whisky and fine spirits, revolutionized the world of gastronomy.

“it produces both bourbon and rye, and even has its own chocolate factory!”

In the mid-1990s,

La Maison du Whisky distributed the first Japanese whiskies in France. At the time, interest in Asian whisky was far more limited. The only products available were the classic blends from the Suntory group, such as Suntory Old, Suntory Kakubin and Suntory Royal.

In the 1990s,

Japanese whisky went through a period of recession that led to the closure of many distilleries. Ichiro Akuto found himself at the epicentre of this upheaval, as he had not only cut his teeth at Karuizawa (closed in 2000) but was also the grandson of Isouji Akuto, the founder of Hanyu (dismantled in 2004). And it was Hanyu that would make Ichiro a household name when he created the Malt Cards series, a now-cult collection of 54 bottlings. In 2007, Akuto founded Chichibu, a small-scale distillery dedicated to the use of high-quality ingredients and precision. On-site, washbacks built from Mizunara wood — a type of Japanese oak prized for its very tight grain — stand alongside Scottish stills designed specially by the famous producer Forsyth’s. Visitors must remove their shoes before entering the distillery, as is custom when entering homes in Japan.

Mars’ Japanese whiskies

are produced at two distilleries, Shinshu and Tsunuki. Located in Nagano Prefecture, west of Tokyo, Shinshu was founded in 1985 by the Hombo Shuzo group, a familyrun business that helped pioneer Japanese whisky. After being mothballed in 1992, the distillery reopened for production in 2011. La Maison du Whisky discovered Mars in 2015 via Number One Drinks, a company directed by Marcin Miller, Whisky Magazine UK’s fi rst editorin-chief. A few years before that, he had put us in contact with Karuizawa, Hanyu and Chichibu, and in 2016 awarded us distribution of Ki No Bi, Japan’s fi rst gin distillery, which he co-founded in Kyoto with his colleague David Croll.

Established in 1948

by the Jagdale family, the day after India declared independence, Amrut was originally a spirits merchant. It was not until 1987 that the group built its own distillery in the south-east of Bangalore, near the Kabini Nature Reserve — which famously inspired the characters in The Jungle Book.

At first, the distillery produced brandy. Then, in 2001, it distilled the first real Indian single malt. This was significant as — although India was officially the largest producer of whisky in the world — these had until then mostly been molassesbased spirits distilled in column stills, termed “whisky” according to local regulations only, which India sold billions of bottles of every year.

Taïwan

is one of the leading destinations for Asian whisky. From the moment it was founded in 2006, Taiwan’s fi rst distillery Kavalan was hotly awaited. Ambitions had been high from day one. Instead of building a small distillery and then expanding it over time, Mr Lee, who also owned the King Car group, created a monumental distillery designed to be able to compete with the best whiskies in the world.

In the late 1990’s,

Gordon & MacPhail imported the first bottles to Europe of the New Zealand whisky Lammerlaw. The enchanting aromas of this lightly peated malt made it an immediate hit with a large number of spirits retailers. When the distillery closed in 1997, Australian businessman Greg Ramsay bought the remaining stock and bottled the casks under the name New Zealand Whisky.

After New Zealand,

La Maison du Whisky began exploring Australia. A huge number of the country’s distilleries are found in Tasmania alone. In the south, near Hobart, we find Sullivans Cove, famous for exclusively producing single casks. And in the north, Hellyers Road, founded in 1997 by a cooperative of whisky-loving milk producers, who distilled their first single malt in 1999 and gradually became Australia’s top-selling craft whisky.

Cotswolds’ history

is closely linked to that of La Maison du Whisky, as the distillery’s founder Daniel Szor lived in France for ten years, where he discovered whisky through the Maison du Whisky Club. After moving to the Cotswolds in England, he decided to make the most of local grain cultivation to create his own single malt, founding the distillery in 2014.

Warenghem,

was founded in 1900. The Breton distillery has produced whisky in Lannion in the Côtes d’Armor region of France since 1983. Its first whisky was a blend sold under the initials WB, for Whisky Breton. In 1998, the distillery released Armorik, France’s first ever single malt. At the time, we weren’t convinced and no-one could have guessed that just a few years later La Maison du Whisky would not only become Armorik’s distributor but also deeply invested in French whisky in general. In just 23 years, the category has been completely revolutionized and now boasts a level of quality simply keeps climbing higher.

It’s in the Alps,

that the second movement to mark the category took place when, in 2009, Frédéric Revol founded Le Domaine des Hautes Glaces, the world’s first organic distillery.

Its terroir-focused approach is equally as innovative and, as in the world of wine, Domaine des Hautes Glaces emphasizes the importance of vintages and the concept of grand crus. Impressed by this avant-garde spirit, La Maison du Whisky has been by its side since day one. Still as innovative as ever, DHG has become a leading French whisky in less than ten years.

The single malt selected for this catalogue was harvested and distilled in 2015, matured for five years in ex-Vin Jaune casks, and bottled at cask strength.

Ninkasi,

is a Lyon-based brand of concert halls and bars that has brewed its own beer since the 1990s. In 2013, its founder Christophe Fargier met Alban Perret, a winegrower and spirits lover who had studied distillation in Scotland. The latter convinced him they should create their own single malt and in 2015, Lyon’s first whisky distillery was founded. Most of the distillery’s expressions are matured in wine casks from the local region, further promoting the concept of terroir.

Since 1956,

La Maison du Whisky has continually travelled the world in search of exceptional spirits. In 2020, we put our suit – cases away and decided to support the emergence of French whisky, selecting casks that stood out from the crowd from all over mainland France. Version Française was born. Since its launch, no less than 14 casks have been bottled: Armorik, Eddu, Kornog, Glann Ar Mor and La Roche aux Fées from Brittany; Artesia from Île-de-France; Castan Vilanova from Occitania; Domaine des Hautes Glaces from Isère; Hepp from Alsace; Ninkasi from the Rhône-Alpes; and La Piautre from Pays de la Loire.
