Rum

By the 1990’s,

By the 1990s, La Maison du Whisky’s catalogue already included a number of rums, mainly rhum agricoles, as well as a handful of independent bottlings from British Guiana. The latter being a little more extreme, they struggled to find their place in the French market, which was more accustomed to the white rhum agricole found in supermarkets and a small number of aged versions sold by specialist retailers.

Bally

is one of the oldest distilleries on Martinique. Located in Carbet, near Mount Pelée, the estate and habitation date from the mid-18th century. In 1917, it was bought by engineer Jacques Bally, who built his own column still, improved the equipment and expanded the estate. He was responsible for the first cask-aged rhum agricoles. He also designed Bally’s two famous bottles (one triangular, the other square).

Like all great producers, Capovilla is a true enthusiast and always on the look out for new experiences. Won over by the variety, these two visionaries decided to set themselves the challenge of producing “the best rhum agricole in the world”. The project was launched in 2005. Capovilla set up a Müller pot still in Marie-Galante. He decided to use red sugar cane and B47.259, both endemic varieties that are harvested by hand. The distillery practices long fermentations lasting five to six days and double distillation in a bain-marie.

Caroni,

Like Port Ellen and Karuizawa in the whisky world, has that very special aura of all now-legendary closed distilleries. Caroni was a former State distillery in Trinidad and Tobago that had been active since 1918, and closed in 2001. Three years later, Luca Gargano discovered the rum during a trip to the country and fell under its spell. In 2006, he bought part of the remaining stock that was still maturing on site. A few years later, La Maison du Whisky teamed up with Velier to buy the last remaining barrels. Importantly, the casks where not taken to Europe, where the angels’ share—i.e. the evaporation rate during maturation— would on average have been five times lower than in the Caribbean.

Alexandre Gabriel,

is a well-known figure in the spirits business who not only helped revolutionize the world of rum but also enabled La Maison du Whisky to embark on a new adventure in the French market. The expressions found in the Plantation range have been selected from across the world and have taken quite a journey for their maturation: initially matured in their homeland, they then continued to age during transit and finally also in Cognac, in the cellars of Maison Ferrand, where Alexandre Gabriel also produces Ferrand cognac and Citadelle gin. Ageing the rum in several stages like this brings it beautiful texture and lots of body. La Maison du Whisky has worked with Plantation since 2010.

Launched in 2005,

the Habitation Velier range is in the heart of the new classification system for rum created by Luca Gargano. At the time, there were few regulations for the category and an unfortunate lack of transparency. It was possible to both sweeten and colour a rum without disclosing this to consumers, and to use an age statement that in reality referred to only the oldest rum in the blend.

In this catalogue, we also present two expressions from the Trois Frères distillery, the oldest distillery in the Seychelles. Located on the island of Mahé in La Plaine St André, it produces a rum called Takamaka using two pot stills and one column still. The pot stills are used mainly to bring out the rum’s aromas, while the column still helps rectify the spirit’s purity. The two traditional rums selected by La Maison du Whisky — one a white rum, the other an aged rum — are among the first versions to be distilled solely in the distillery’s pot stills.

“Each showcases the still used to produce the rum in question”

En 2013,

Luca Gargano created his fi rst blend, Papalin, produced from a Cuban rum, a Venezuelan rum and a smaller quantity of Caroni. Most rums selected by Velier are rare and exclusive products designed for tasting. Nonetheless, Luca Gargano has also ensured he can cater to a broader clientèle, without ever compromising on quality.

Found in 1884,

Beenleigh is the oldest distillery in Australia still in operation. It produces rum from molasses selected exclusively from family-run farms across the country. The rum is distilled in a double-distillation vat still. The spirit is then aged in casks previously used for Australian brandy, creating a traditional rum with a very fruity and unique style that immediately diff ers from its Caribbean cousins on the first nose.

The thirst of exploration

of Luca Gargano has repeatedly led him to introduce the world to many littleknown and sometimes almost-extinct distilleries. In 2013, on a trip to Haiti, he encountered a number of produces of traditional Clairin.
Clairin is not exactly rum but instead in its own category, and produced from wild cane sugar juice that is fermented without artificial yeasts and distilled in traditional craft stills. The result is a very aromatic white spirit that is immediately recognizable on the first nose.

“bring traditional Clairin to the rest of the world”

La Maison & Velier,

after falling for the quality of the Cristalline cane sugar variety that grows in Haiti, decided to produce a Pure Single Rum on the island. They were assisted in the endeavour by the Barbancourt-Linge family, local partners who help us bottle and store the Clairins. Together, in 2018, we built a micro-distillery named simply Distillerie de Port-au-Prince.

In 2017,

when Luca Gargano made his first visit to Hampden in Trelawny, north-east Jamaica, he discovered a place where time seemed to have stood still since its creation in 1753. Operating for more than 250 years, the distillery’s philosophy is built on five clearly identified foundations: the pure and local water source, use of native yeasts for fermentation, distillation exclusively in pot stills, maturation entirely in a tropical climate, and the complete absence of sweeteners and artificial colouring. The result is a rum like no other on the planet.

Since it was established,

La Maison du Whisky has always been interested in both the major spirits categories and new market trends. It is no surprise, then, that we fi nd ourselves drawn to rum punch, a category that has undergone huge growth over the last ten years. This traditional product from the French West Indies and Réunion Island has taken mainland France by storm, notably through very natural expressions produced by macerating fresh fruit in white agricole rum.

Founded in 1670,

Worthy Park has produced rum since 1710, making it Jamaica’s oldest distillery. It was mothballed in 1950 until 2005. When the distillery reopened, Velier tried to get in contact, hoping to buy some of its casks but never received a reply. In 2011, with the distillery still little-known to the general public, Luca Gargano finally visited the site. A close partnership between the two companies was born.

Berry Bros. & Rudd

Berry Bros. & Rudd in the United Kingdom, is best known for its selection of wine available at its historic store at No. 3 St James Street. In France, it is for its second job as a fine spirits producer and bottler that La Maison du Whisky has imported its products since 2005. Although whisky has been in its DNA since the start (cf. page 42), Berry Bros has also sold rum for many years, mainly produced in the British style in the Caribbean. The more exotic Fidji 2009 selected this year reflects the fruity style also found in various Australian rums.

As in the whisky world, a huge number of rum bottlers exist, regularly releasing small limited editions and single casks. La Maison du Whisky is one of these. Throughout the year we select casks bottled for ranges such as Rum of the World and the Transcontinental Rum Line. In 2019, we bought four barrels of rum from Trinidad. At the time, they had been matured for 17 years on the archipelago.
